Be it in the case of opening a website, sending an email, or high-frequency trading, bits and bytes of information have to cross numerous nodes at which micro-decisions are made. These decisions concern the most efficient path through the network, the processing speed, or the priority of incoming data packets. Despite their multifaceted nature, micro-decisions are a dimension of control and surveillance in the twenty-first century that has received little critical attention.

In the networked twenty-first century, digital platforms have significantly influenced capital accumulation and digital culture. Platforms, such as social network sites (e.g. Facebook), search engines (e.g. Google), and smartphones (e.g. iPhone), are increasingly crucial because they function as major digital media intermediaries. Emerging companies in non-Western countries have created unique platforms, controlling their own national markets and competing with Western-based platform empires in the global markets. Le 19 juillet 2014, le journal Le Soir révélait à Bruxelles que selon des estimations américaines, britanniques et belges, la France, la Belgique, le Royaume-Uni, l’Italie, la Pologne et les États-Unis pourraient perdre entre 43 et 50 % de leurs emplois dans les dix à quinze prochaines années. Trois mois plus tard, le Journal du dimanche soutenait que trois millions d’emplois seraient condamnés à disparaître en France au cours des dix prochaines années.
